Description

Buckle into an open-air Jeep and get ready to explore one of Durango’s most scenic hidden gems: La Plata Canyon. This half-day off-road tour begins just minutes from downtown and takes you deep into the San Juan backcountry, with big rewards and zero stress.

Your experienced local guide will drive up the canyon’s historic mining road, following the La Plata River as it winds through towering spruce forests, steep granite cliffs, and colorful wildflower meadows. Along the way, you’ll hear stories of boomtown mining days, ancient geology, and the native Ute people who once roamed these valleys.

As the trail climbs, you’ll pass waterfalls, old mines, and panoramic lookouts with views that stretch to New Mexico. On clear days, you might spot wildlife like deer, marmots, or even the occasional black bear.

This tour tops out above 10,000 feet, offering alpine scenery without requiring a hike. The ride is adventurous but family-friendly—great for first-timers, seniors, and anyone craving a taste of the wild without committing to a full-day trek.

Frequently Asked Questions

What if the weather is bad for our Jeep tour?
We go out in all weather, rain or shine. If the weather looks rainy, bring a rain jacket. We will have fun no matter what the weather does. We also rent out extra gear in case you forgot your rain jacket at home and will have blankets along as well.
Will I be required to drive on this tour?
Nope! You'll be enjoying the views from the back of the open-air (covered) vehicle. Our expert guides do the rest!
What type of Jeep or off-road tour is right for me?
The first question is do you want to drive your own vehicle or be driven to scenic viewpoints by a guide? There are amazing options for Jeep rentals to DIY, have a guided tour where you'll still drive or hop aboard a fully guided tour if you'd prefer not to be white-knuckled and just dig the views. Ask us for more tips and options!
Do I need to be in good physical shape for this Jeep tour?
While most of this trip is simply riding in a vehicle enjoying views, you'll want to be able to comfortably climb a short step ladder in and out of the vehicle and hold on for a ride that can be bumpy at times. Optional short walks at high elevation to visit scenic viewpoints.
What should I wear and bring on a Jeep tour?
You won’t want to forget your camera, there will be some amazing views! Hat, sunscreen, sunglasses- although the temperature drops, the sun’s rays become far more intense as you gain elevation so you want to make sure you protect yourself while in our open-air vehicle. Make sure to bring Water- it is very easy to get dehydrated at high elevation. Wear good shoes in case we have time to walk around, bring a rain shell and multiple layers of clothing to stay warm or shed layers as needed.
