This comprehensive guide explores the various options for staying in Telluride, including camping, backcountry huts, hotels, and vacation rentals, while considering different budgets and amenities.

Staying in Telluride vs. Mountain Village

When planning a trip to Telluride, you'll need to decide whether to stay in the town of Telluride, in Mountain Village, or in a nearby area. Each location offers a unique experience, so your choice will depend on your preferences for atmosphere, amenities, and access to activities.

Telluride: Historic Charm and Central Location

Atmosphere:
Telluride is a historic mining town with a distinct charm. Its downtown area is compact, with colorful Victorian buildings, locally-owned shops, art galleries, and a variety of restaurants and bars. The town has a laid-back vibe and is perfect for those who enjoy walking or biking to explore their surroundings.

Accommodations:
In Telluride, you’ll find a mix of boutique hotels, historic inns, and vacation rentals, often housed in restored buildings that reflect the town’s rich history. Staying here offers the convenience of being within walking distance of most attractions, including the Gondola, Town Park, and the many festivals held throughout the year.

Access to Activities:
Telluride’s central location means you’re close to hiking trails, the ski area, and other outdoor activities. It’s also the best spot for nightlife and dining, with most bars and restaurants located along Main Street and nearby.

Mountain Village: Resort-Style Luxury and Ski Access

Atmosphere:
Mountain Village is a modern, purpose-built resort community located just above Telluride. It’s designed with convenience in mind, featuring ski-in/ski-out accommodations, luxury hotels, and upscale dining options. The area has a more polished, resort-like feel compared to the rustic charm of Telluride.

Accommodations:
Mountain Village is known for its luxury hotels, sprawling vacation homes, and condominiums. Many properties offer direct access to the slopes, making it an excellent choice for ski enthusiasts. The accommodations here tend to be more spacious and modern, often with added amenities like spas, pools, and golf course access.

Access to Activities:
Mountain Village is ideal for winter sports, with many properties offering ski-in/ski-out access. In summer, the area is perfect for golf, mountain biking, and hiking. While it’s quieter than Telluride in terms of nightlife, you’ll still find some fine dining options and après-ski spots.

Getting Between Telluride and Mountain Village

One of the great features of the Telluride area is how easy it is to travel between Telluride and Mountain Village. The two locations are connected by the free Gondola, which operates year-round and offers stunning views of the surrounding mountains.

The Gondola:

  • Duration: The ride between Telluride and Mountain Village takes about 13 minutes.

  • Hours: The Gondola operates daily, with extended hours during peak seasons. Summer and winter typically run from early morning until midnight. During the off-season, the gondola is closed for routine maintenance.

  • Accessibility: The Gondola is free to ride and accessible to everyone, including those with strollers, bikes, or skis.

  • Experience: The ride itself is an experience, offering panoramic views of the San Juan Mountains and the town below. It’s a popular attraction, even for those not staying in Mountain Village.

Budget Considerations

Telluride is known for being a high-end destination, but it’s still possible to visit without breaking the bank. Here are some tips for budgeting your stay:

  • Off-Peak Travel: Consider visiting during the shoulder seasons (spring and fall) when accommodation prices tend to be lower. You’ll still enjoy beautiful scenery and outdoor activities with fewer crowds and better rates.

  • Group Travel: If you’re traveling with family or friends, splitting the cost of a vacation rental can be more economical than booking multiple hotel rooms. Plus, you’ll have the added benefit of a kitchen to prepare meals.

  • Package Deals: Look for package deals that bundle accommodations with lift tickets, dining, or other activities. Many hotels and vacation rentals offer specials, especially during the off-season.

  • Camping: For the most budget-friendly option, camping is hard to beat. Just be sure to book your campsite early, as spots can fill up quickly, especially during the summer and fall.

Amenities to Consider

When choosing where to stay in Telluride, it’s essential to consider the amenities that are most important to you. Here’s a breakdown of common amenities and which type of accommodation might be best suited for each:

  • Ski-In/Ski-Out Access: If skiing is the focus of your trip, look for hotels, vacation rentals, or even some luxury campsites in Mountain Village with direct access to the slopes. This can save time and hassle, especially if you’re traveling with children or large groups.

  • Pet-Friendly Accommodations: Many hotels and vacation rentals in Telluride are pet-friendly, but it’s always a good idea to check in advance. Town Park Campground is also a great option for campers traveling with pets.

  • Spa and Wellness Facilities: For a relaxing getaway, consider staying at a hotel with a full-service spa, such as The Peaks Resort or the Madeline Hotel. Some luxury vacation rentals also offer spa-like amenities, including hot tubs and saunas.

  • Dining Options: If you prefer to dine out, staying in downtown Telluride or Mountain Village gives you easy access to various restaurants and cafes. Many hotels offer on-site dining, while vacation rentals with kitchens allow for cooking your own meals. Your vacation rental can also assist in organizing a private chef.

  • Family-Friendly Features: Traveling with kids? Look for accommodations with amenities like pools, playgrounds, and family-sized rooms or vacation rentals. Some hotels, like The Peaks Resort, also offer babysitting services and kids’ programs.

Telluride offers a wide range of accommodations to suit every traveler’s needs and budget. Whether you’re camping under the stars, staying in a historic hotel, or enjoying the comforts of a luxury vacation rental, your stay in Telluride is sure to be memorable.
